Plant layout optimized to consider the existing facilities (Brownfield plant)

The MONCALIERI Combined / Cogeneration Cycle Power Plant is located in the North of Italy, in the surroundings of the city of Torino.

AEM Torino S.p.A., now IREN S.p.A., one of the biggest players in the Italian power generation market, signed a turnkey Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contract with a JV between Siemens and Tecnimont for the construction of 400 MW   in the existing power plant in year 2002.
The project is based on no. 1 gas turbine burning natural gas, associated with a three-pressure level RH horizontal, natural circulation HRSGs with duct burning system, feeding one full condensing steam turbine generator.
Due to the restrictions imposed by the existing installation and in particular for the requirements of the environmental permits (among the others, the reduced visual impact and all the installation indoor), the space and layout of the plant that conferred a specific characteristic has been adequately optimized. The Gas Turbines are installed in a new building while the steam turbine is located inside an existing building.
The Power Plant was designed taking into consideration to provide thermal energy (for an overall of 260 MWt) to the district heating network.
The power plant has been conceived in compliance with the best practices in sustainability and environmental responsibility. In particular, the activities were executed in compliance with the rules of ISO 14001 and EMAS.
The power plant fulfilled all contractual technical requirements including high availability and strict environmental emission controls.
