Inauguration of the CDEEE Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Station

July 31st 2020 - The inauguration of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Station took place on Wednesday, in the Peravia Province, Dominican Republic. The thermoelectric plant is composed of two large electricity generating units for a total of 752 megawatts gross. Built in Consortium with the Odebrecht and Estrella Group, Tecnimont is the strategic technology leader of the project executing the Engineering services and Procurement for the power block, air quality treatment system and control system, along with Commissioning and plant Start-up services.

The official inauguration ceremony was celebrated in the presence of President Danilo Medina, senior government representatives and the Vice President of the CDEEE , the Dominican Corporation of State Electrical Companies.
This project is of strategic importance for the Dominican Republic's development. Punta Catalina once in operation successfully changed the national energy matrix by reducing the cost of electricity in the Dominican Republic.

This Project is based on state-of-the-art technology to achieve high performance close to “supercritical” coal-fired power plants and represents a new installed capacity equal to 30% of the national total power demand, with low emission levels for a sustainable environmental and social impact. Tecnimont planned extensive initiatives for soil improvement using a combination of innovative techniques to cope with the unfavorable and difficult soil conditions of the site. This has enabled the state-owned national utility CDEEE to replace old fuel oil plants that have larger polluting effects on the environment.
